To make the vast digital archives of music more easily accessible, it is necessary to have searchable music descriptors, or metadata, that are meaningful and robust. While metadata conventionally covers editorial information that accompanies the music on a CD such as genre and artist, it could also include community-contributed labels such as mood. On the other hand, signal processing methods can be used to extract specific musical knowledge automatically from audio signals. In this tutorial we present signal modeling and analysis methods for speech and music motivated by audio classification and retrieval applications. The basic building blocks of a music retrieval system are the signal processing front-end that extracts perceptually relevant features from the signal, and the pattern matching module that serves to detect musically relevant similarities between signals. The audio processing research is even more challenging due the fact that signal characteristics as well as important musical attributes are culture-specific and therefore need specific data representations and models. We draw upon examples from Indian music to illustrate the design of feature extraction and similarity-based search methods for audio retrieval.

In the first part of the workshop, fundamentals of circuit simulation will be discussed. Techniques for assembly of circuit equations, solution of non-linear problems, and solution of ODEs will be discussed along with examples. Advantages and limitations of the various methods will be described. Following this introduction, several circuit simulation examples will be taken up, and simulation results will be illustrated.

The second part of the workshop is a hands-on session in which the participants will be given a few simulation problems. The hands-on session will be based on the public-domain simulation package, SEQUEL. However, the expertise gained by the participants in this session would be of a general nature, i.e., it will also help them in using other simulation packages.

T3:  Real time Circuit Simulation

Real-time simulation is concerned with the simulation of circuits and systems, such that the time taken to simulate a particular interval is the same as the actual time of that interval. An important application of real-time simulation is hardware-in-loop (HIL) testing of controller hardware and software. In this tutorial, we will be concerned with the overall environment for real-time simulation, followed by the hardware and system software requirements for setting up a real-time simulator. We shall present and review different architectures for real-time simulators, and present one architecture in detail. We shall also provide a background which could enable participants to assemble their own small-scale real-time simulation platforms for specific tasks.

T5:  Low power Embedded system using TI MSP430

C.P. Ravikumar is presently the Technical Director of University Relations at Texas Instruments, India. He also leads the TI India Technical University which provides learning opportunities to employees of TI India. He is also an adjunct faculty at IIT Madras. Before joining TI India in 2001, Ravikumar was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1991-2001). He also held a visiting position at the University of Southern California (1995-1996) and the position of Vice President (Training) at Controlnet India Pvt Ltd (2000-2001). He obtained his Ph.D. (Computer Engineering) from the University of Southern California (1991), M.E. in Computer Science with highest scores from Indian Institute of Science (1987) and B.E. in Electronics with a Gold Medal from Bangalore University (1983). He has published over 200 papers in leading International conferences and journals. He founded the VLSI Design and Test Symposium (VDAT) and has been the General Chair of this event from its inception in 1998. He is the author/editor/coauthor of over 12 books in areas of VLSI. He has won the best paper award at IEEE International Conference on VLSI Design (2002) and VLSI Test Symposium (2005). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and was the honorary secretary of VSI (2003-2011).
